Cleaning is a big part of dirt bike maintenance, especially if you've been riding off-road or on a dirt track. After a day of riding, a quick wash can remove dirt buildup and keep your bike looking fresh. With a safe cleaning process, you can work quickly and protect your ride. Seal Your Dirt Bike

Before you wash your dirt bike, take the time to seal up key openings. Place bolts in the end of open hoses, and cover the end of the muffler with a plug or a few strips of heavy-duty tape. If possible, remove your seat — water can damage the foam and reduce the seat's lifespan. Then, cover the airbox. If you can't remove the seat, tape over the vents in the airbox. This process prevents water from reaching and damaging delicate mechanical components.

Release Caked-On Dirt and Mud

After an intense ride, your dirt bike is probably coated in chunks of dirt. Before you start washing, knock them off. You can use a rubber mallet or another non-abrasive item. A knocking motion dislodges and releases clumps; make sure not to drag the dirt, as it can scratch your paint. If your chain or footpegs are muddy, use a wire brush to clean them out.

Spray and Scrub the Bike

Gently tip your bike onto its side, and use a pressure washer to release the dirt and mud. If you're dealing with stubborn, dried-on clumps, you might want to use a lower setting. Repeat on the other side. Then, make a solution of water and gentle soap, and scrub the bike with steel wool or a brush. Once you're done, use your pressure washer to rinse off the soap.

Dry the Dirt Bike

When your bike is clean and free of soap, dry it off with a clean, non-abrasive towel; microfiber shop cloths work well. This reduces the risk of rust and water spots, especially if the weather is cool or damp. While you're at it, take a can of compressed air, and dry off the areas around your chain, radiator fins, and electrical fittings. If you have time, add lubricant as needed. For an extra-fresh look, polish the bike.

Cleaning your dirt bike is a great way to remove buildup, prevent rust, and avoid water damage. It's a good idea to complete a full cleaning after every muddy ride.
