A Company Founded By Outdoorsmen

At the end of World War II, metal production was at a high, and one company that made use of this metal was Hetteen Hoist & Derrick in Roseau, Minnesota, a farm equipment manufacturer. The three men who founded this company were avid outdoor enthusiasts who loved to explore the Minnesota wilderness, especially during the winter. To facilitate this, they made a snowmobile prototype that soon became the talk of the town. Thus, Polaris® was born and named for the North Star, which is a winter fixture in the sky.

Surviving & Thriving

Polaris® started out with snowmobile manufacture, but they soon began to manufacture other land-based transportation in the form of off-roading vehicles for sport and recreational usage. The company was sold to Textron during the 1970s, but following the recession, the company’s employees bought it back and fostered a new generation of development with their entrance into the burgeoning ATV market in the 1980s. The rest is history, with Polaris® becoming a household name and a true powersports leader.
