In the Beginning

Yamaha Motor Company, an offshoot of the larger Yamaha Corporation, began in 1955. After manufacturing motorcycles and other powersports vehicles for 30 years, the company set about developing their own personal watercraft to compete with other models on the market. At the time, PWCs were a relatively new addition to the powersports world, but they were swiftly becoming popular with racers, speed demons, and even rescue personnel as a means of quick transport across the water.

The WaveRunner was a sit-down style PWC with a focus on comfort. The open-stern design made it attractive to look at, while its combination of easy handling and amazing agility made the WaveRunner popular among novices and expert riders alike. This PWC soon shot to the forefront of the PWC market, earning many devotees with its design.

Improvements

But Yamaha didn’t rest on their laurels. The company continued to toy with the WaveRunner and each release throughout the 1990s had new changes and developments incorporated into its design. The WaveRunner continued to gain fans during the last part of the 20th century and into the new millennium.

The FX 140 WaveRunner was the first four-stroke PWC released in 2002. The smooth engine made for an excellent riding experience, while the fuel economy ensured that riders didn’t need to fuel up as often. A stable hull design helped riders coast through waves without being buffeted about. 

By 2008, it was time to make the WaveRunner more lightweight. This was achieved through the use of NanoXcel composite in the hull, which made the new PWC 35% lighter than prior designs. And Yamaha continues to improve upon their WaveRunner designs to this very day so you know you’re getting a top-notch PWC when you buy Yamaha.
